About Morris Finkelstein
Thank you for your interest in my photographs. I live in St. Louis, Missouri, and am passionate about photographing nature, particularly wild birds. I became involved with birding and bird photography in 2008. My gear includes a Nikon D850 camera body, Nikon 500mm f/4 VR2 and Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF VR, Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR2, and a Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8mm VR lens. My interests in birding and nature have taken me outdoors almost daily in Connecticut, New York, and now in St. Louis, as well as to East Africa, the Southwest United States, Colorado, the Caribbean, Israel, and to Brazil. I've been fortunate to have seen and photographed over 800 species of birds. Learning about the diverse behaviors, food sources, ecological niches and migrations of birds and animals has deepened my understanding of nature, and helped get the photos that I appreciate. I get a lot of satisfaction when I'm able to capture a beautiful and interesting shot, and share it with others. I've enjoyed meeting people with similar interests in birding, nature, and photography. While some may "pigeon-hole" bird-photographers as "photographers", I view myself as both a birder and a photographer. I try to be mindful of the birds and animals, keeping a comfortable distance, and never baiting raptors or birds.
I was not always totally immersed in bird photography. I was previously a long-distance, open water swimmer, immersed in the oceans and lakes, while at the same time enjoying the oneness with nature that is commonly appreciated by many other swimmers. I successfully swam across the English Channel in 2003, and around Manhattan Island in 2001. My early professional life was as a Research Biologist. I practiced Medicine until retiring several years ago. While not formally trained as a photographer, I've been shooting 35mm photos since 1971. I found that my training in biology and medicine enhance my observational skills and appreciation for birds, nature and wildlife. I hope that you find my photographs to be interesting and pleasing, and that they inspire you to be more inquisitive of the natural environment.
